NFL MONDAY NIGHTS
Patriots send message (or did they)
On December 6, 2010 the Jets
traveled to New England for a game that would likely decide the AFC East
champion. Both teams entered the game at
9-2. The Jets had defeated the patriots
in week two 28-14.
The rhetoric was high on the
Jets side as Rex Ryan sought to draw the Patriots into a war of words. A national television audience settled in for
one of the season's most anticipated games.
There was no game. Rather, the Patriots took the Jets to the
woodshed and made them cry uncle. The
Patriots led 17-0 after the first quarter and never let up. While Jet quarterback Mark Sanchez was
throwing three picks, Patriot QB Tom Brady was tossing four touchdowns. The Patriots won the game going away
45-3.
Clearly the Pats had sent a
message. They went on to finish 14-2 and
win the AFC East. The Jets stumbled to
11-5, earning a wildcard playoff birth.
The Jets upset the Colts in
the wildcard round to set up a rubber match game with the Patriots. The Jets had not learned their lesson. They continued to talk trash even though the
Patriots had beat them by six touchdowns just a month ago. The Jets backed it up with a 28-21 win. The Patriots marked the third straight year
that they failed to win a playoff game.
