NFL MONDAY NIGHTS
Chiefs edge Steelers 13-10
The Pittsburgh Steelers play
the Chiefs tonight and ESPN probably wishes they could get a "do
over" on the schedule. Many pundits
picked the Chiefs to be a playoff contender (Peter King had them winning the AFC
West). Instead, the Chiefs enter their
ninth game still looking for their first lead of any kind. (They did beat New Orleans in overtime in a
game they never led until a final play field goal).
Fifteen years ago things were
different. A 6-2 Pittsburgh team with
Kordell Stewart at QB came to Kansas City to play a Monday night game against
the 6-2 Chiefs led by Elvis Grbac. My
friend Joel brought over the pizza, I supplied the brewskis, and we settled in
to watch a much-anticipated game.
The Chiefs took a 13-10
halftime lead after Marcus Allen threw a halfback option touchdown. The Chiefs outgained the Steelers nearly 2-1
but committed three turnovers and were unable to increase the lead.
The Kansas City defense held
the Steelers in check for the second half to secure the 13-10 victory. Both teams would go on to win their divisions
in 1997. Each would eventually lose to
the Denver Broncos in the playoffs.
