GAME DAY MEMORIES
Broncos vs Bengals - The Immaculate
Deflection Game
The current scheduling system
in the NFL rotates conference and non conference opponents. The 16 games teams play each year break down
as follows:
1) Six games against teams in
their own division
2) Four games against teams
from one of the four divisions of the opposite conference on a rotating basis.
3) Four games against teams
from one of the three other divisions of their conference on a rotating basis
4) One game against a team from
each of the other two divisions in their own conference determined by records
from the prior season.
For example the Broncos
16-game schedule for 2012 breaks down as follows:
1) Six games against the AFC
West (Home and away with the Raiders, Chargers, and Chiefs).
2) Four games against the NFC
South
3) Four games against the AFC
North
4) One game against New
England and Houston, the winners of the AFC East and South respectively in
2011. The Broncos "won" the AFC West
in 2008 (as much as 8-8 wins anything).
So this means that at least
once every three years the Broncos will play the Bengals. The teams played last year under scheduling
item four. This year they play under
scheduling item three.
The Broncos and Bengals tend
to play close games, but the Broncos usually win. The Broncos hold an 18-8 series lead and have
won 12 of the last 14 games the teams have played. One of those victories came on opening week
of the 2009 season.
The Broncos met the Bengals
in Cincinnati in their first game under new coach Josh McDaniels. The game was an eyesore with neither team
doing much of anything for the first 55 minutes of the game. The Bengals scored a late touchdown to take a
7-6 lead. Then Kyle Orton lofted a pass down the left
sideline. A Bengal defender tipped the
pass and Denver receiver Brandon Stokley caught it in stride and raced 87 yards
for the winning score.
