NFL Game Day Memories - The Forgotten Man

GAME DAY MEMORIES
Lions vs Packers - The Forgotten Man

The Packers played the Lions in the final week of the 2011 NFL season.  The Packers rested starting QB Aaron Rogers and some of their other starters as Green Bay had already secured the number one playoff seed in the NFC.  The Lions had also clinched a playoff spot.  A win would guarantee them the number five seed.  A loss would likely result in the number six seed.

The teams played the game like a seven on seven passing drill.  Detroit QB Matthew Stafford finished with 520 passing yards and five touchdowns.  Packer backup Matt Flynn did him one better with six touchdown throws and 480 passing yards.  Flynn passed to Jermichael Finley for the winning score with just over a minute to play as the Packers won 45-41.

The New Orleans Saints easily outgunned the Lions in the wild card round.  The New York Giants upset the Packers in Green Bay in the divisional round in route to winning the Super Bowl.

The big winner turned out to be Matt Flynn.  The obscure quarterback parlayed his record setting day into a big free agent contract.  In March Flynn signed a $26 million contract with the Seattle Seahawks.  Reports pegged the guaranteed amount at $10 million.

The Seahawks were not so enamored with Flynn that they would hand him the job.  Instead they drafted an intriguing QB prospect Russell Wilson in the third round of the 2012 draft.  Wilson won the starting job with a stellar training camp and pre season.  He has guided Seattle to a 6-4 record and into playoff contention in the NFC.  Matt Flynn has returned to obscurity as an NFL backup QB.  This time he sits on a fatter wallet on the bench.
