GAME DAY MEMORIES
BRADY VS MANNING – THE FOURTH DOWN PLAY
Tom Brady and Peyton Manning
duel for the 13th time this Sunday when
the Broncos visit New
England. Brady’s Patriots have won eight
of the twelve previous meetings. Manning
and his Colts did steal a memorable victory on November 15, 2009. Many refer to that game as the “fourth down”
game.
The Patriots scored early in
the fourth quarter to take a 31-14 lead.
Manning rallied the Colts for two touchdowns, but the Patriots still led
34-28 with 2:23 remaining. The Patriots
had the ball and needed just one first down to close out the game. The Patriots faced fourth and two on their
28-yard line with just over two minutes to play. Ignoring convention the Patriots kept the
offense on the field. Tom Brady passed
to Kevin Faulk. Colt Safety Melvin
Bullitt drilled Faulk to the ground just shy of the first down.
Manning methodically moved
the Colts in for the winning score to cap a wild 35-34 Colt victory. The win moved the Colts to 9-0 on their way
to a 14-0 start. The Colts did not try
for the perfect season, resting their starters for much of games 15 and 16 and
lost both games. The Colts represented
the AFC in the Super Bowl, losing to New Orleans 31-17.
Many criticized the Hoodie’s
decision to go on fourth down.
Statistically speaking he made a solid decision.
