NFL Top Ten List - Best Super Bowls

NFL TOP TEN LIST
BEST SUPER BOWLS

Let’s face it.  We put a ton of expectations on the Super Bowl.  We ask it to culminate five months of our fanatic devotion to the NFL.  We ask it to be the centerpiece of one of our biggest party days.  The fans of the two teams that play in the game seek a certain kind of immortality.  They want to always have that moment, hold that memory of their team hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

With such a burden to carry, it is no wonder that the Super Bowl has given us more coal than gold.  But there have been some great games.  For me the great games usually hold one or two great moments that flashback when I think back on those games.  Here then, my subjective list of the top ten Super Bowls.

10) Super Bowl X – Steelers 21 Cowboys 17.  The Steelers were defending their title.  The Cowboys had surprised the favored Rams in the NFC Championship game.  The teams played a close, hard fought game.  Lynn Swann made a series of spectacular catches that stand the test of time.
9) Super Bowl XVII – Redskins 27 Dolphins 17 – I have this image of John Riggins busting through the Miami line on fourth and one in the 4th quarter to score the go ahead touchdown.  The game had a series of big plays, including Fulton Walker of Miami scoring the first kickoff return touchdown in a Super Bowl.
8) Super Bowl XXIII – Niners 20 Bengals 16 – The Bengals were unable to generate any offense but led going into the fourth quarter on the strength of timely defense and a 93-yard kickoff return by Stanford Jennings.  The Niners scored two 4th quarter touchdowns to secure the victory.  John Taylor caught the game-winning 10-yard pass from Joe Montana with 34 seconds to play.
7) Super Bowl XLIV – Saints 31 Colts 17 – Peyton Manning against Drew Brees.  Manning against the franchise his father quarterbacked three decades earlier.  New Orleans held a 24-17 lead midway through the fourth quarter.  The Colts were driving for a tying score.  Tracy Porter stepped in front of a Manning pass and took it to the house.  Party in the French Quarter.
6) Super Bowl XXV – Giants 20 Bills 19 – Giants possess the ball 2/3s of the game to contain high-powered Bill offense.  Mark Ingram breaking tackle after tackle to secure a drive sustaining first down is the signature play for me.  Norwood’s kick sails wide right and the Bills start their four-game Super Bowl losing streak.

5) Super Bowl XXXIV Rams 23 Titans 16 – Rams led 16-0 late in the third quarter.  Pretty dull game up to that point.  Steve McNair rallied the Titans to tie the game at 16 with just over two minutes to go.  Warner to Bruce touchdown pass of 73 yards gives the Rams back the lead.  McNair and the Titans have one last play to tie.  And then…..

4) Super Bowl XXXII Broncos 31 Packers 24 – The game featured John Elway and Brett Favre, but Denver’s Terrell Davis stole the show with three touchdowns and 157 yards.  A back and forth game where Packers fail to tie the game on their last possession.

3) Super Bowl XLIII Steelers 27 Cardinals 23 -  For my money the best fourth quarter of any Super Bowl.  Cardinals rally late to take the lead on second Larry Fitzgerald score.  Steelers win on final drive as Santonio Holmes makes great end zone grab.  Game also features my choice for best defensive play in Super Bowl history:  James Harrison returns an interception 100 yards at the end of the first half.

2) Super Bowl III Jets 16 Colts 7 – Broadway Joe runs off the field giving the number one finger.  The Jets had just pulled off a big upset, which remains to this day the biggest upset win in Super Bowl history.  The game was actually pretty dull and sloppy.  Historically it set the stage for a merger of equals between the AFL and the NFL.

1) Super Bowl  XLII – Giants 17 Patriots 14 – Only the Giants stood between the Patriots and a perfect season.  The Giants held the most potent offense the NFL had ever seen in check all game long.  Tom Brady and the Patriots managed a late fourth quarter score to take the lead 14-10.  Then Manning made his escape and Tyree secured the catch on the greatest play in Super Bowl History.  The Giants go on to score and win the game.  The Patriots are left to wonder about the chances to close out the game that slipped away. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NB1Eqv7veho
