NFL Super Bowl Winners by Division

SUPER BOWL WINNERS AND LOSERS
BY DIVISION

There is always room for a barroom debate as to which is the toughest NFL division.  The diplomatic answer is that there is no answer.  The relative strength of a given division is cyclical.  A dominant division today may be in the basement five years from now.  Sounds reasonable, but…….

If you go by Super Bowl appearances and wins, then the NFC East has been the dominant division in football since 1967.  I know, teams have moved around, franchises have come and gone (and come again if you are in Cleveland).  Still, the NFC EAST dominates the Super Bowl landscape.  Twenty aggregate appearances.  Twelve aggregate wins.  The only division with two teams to have won four or more Super Bowls.  Its cousin, the AFC EAST, is the only division with two teams that have lost four Super Bowls.

Just over half (18) of the NFL’s teams have won a Super Bowl.  Four teams have never appeared: The New Browns, the Texans, the Jaguars, and the Lions.  The Browns, Texans, and Jaguars have the “young franchise” excuse.  The Lions?  We have been making excuses for them for decades.

So, history says there is almost a 50% chance an NFC EAST team will be in the Super Bowl.  History says there is a zero percent chance the Lions will be there.

The standings below credit the historical Super Bowls of franchises that have had wanderlust.  The Colts record includes a win and a loss from their days in Baltimore.  The Rams record includes a loss from their time in Los Angeles.  The Ravens stats would have included any appearances from the “old” Browns.  Alas there were no such appearances due to “the Drive” and “the fumble”.
