NFL MONDAY NIGHTS
Bears vs Cardinals
Ahhhh- Monday night games in Arizona. The Cardinals have not been good enough for
the league to select them to host many Monday night games. Maybe that October night in 2006 is still too
fresh in our collective memory.
A very good Chicago Bear team
came to town to play the Cardinals. The
Bears were 5-0, the Redbirds 1-4. The
Bears would reach the Super Bowl, but that is not the storyline for this post.
Rex Grossman was worse than
awful that night. He threw four
interceptions and the Bears gained just 168 yards on offense. Matt Leinart tossed two first quarter
touchdowns and the Cardinals led 23-3 late in the third quarter. The way the Bears were playing the Cardinals
needed simply to stay out of their own way to get the win.
They didn't. In the span of 12 minutes the Bears scored a
touchdown on a fumble return, a touchdown on an interception return, and a
touchdown on a Devin Hester punt return.
Shockingly the Bears led 24-23 late in the fourth quarter. The Cardinals drove into field goal
range. Cardinals kicker Neil Rackers put
the exclamation point on the epic collapse when he missed a 42-yard field goal
with less than a minute to play.
The game was one of the worst
eyesores in Monday Night history.
However, it did produce a legendary rant from Cardinal coach Dennis
Green:
